Many lacemakers, especially in Europe, make stunning 3-dimensional pieces. Therefore I think this post is not off-topic because it will be of interest to anyone on the list interested in 3-D textiles, plus the significant number of us interested in math.
Daina Taimina's book called "Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes" is BRILLIANT! The woman is a genius, and her book inspiring. The ideas of how one could use many of her ideas in lace sculpture are coming so fast I can hardly keep up making notes on them. The title sounds wacky but the content is far from wacky--it is fascinating. I can't recommend this book strongly enough. It is a masterpiece. I wish I had the mind this woman must have. Here's a tiny URL to the book on Amazon. (I tried ordering it first from Barnes & Noble and they cancelled my order because, they said, it was unavailable. Amazon shipped it within a couple of weeks.) http://tiny.cc/1xny8 If anyone else has seen the book, I'd be interested in hearing of their experiences trying her models.
