Hope no-one's squeamish, but it's a fact that living things die. As a former horse owner, I can say that the horsehair comes from the tails and manes of dead horses. When each of my three went, I was quite happy knowing that most parts of them would be put to use rather than wasted. The mane and tail hair is washed and sterilised before being put to other use such as stuffing things or for manes and tails of rocking horses.
