Dear Arachne members,

Just a short introduction, since this is my first
contribution to Arachne.
My name is Joke Sinclair.  The strange, funny, first
name is the result of my Dutch parents and upbringing.  They never anticipated
me marrying a Scot and moving to Britain.

About the lace on Ebay.  It is
definitely bobbin lace.  We would call it now Flanders lace.  Although
Flanders and Binche are closely linked, the ground used in Binche is one or
more varieties of the snowflake ground.  In the lace used for the
handkerchief, the snowflake ground is only used as a filling.  The main ground
is the so-called five-hole ground or Flanders ground.
 I don't have the
expertise to tell its age, although if you look at the enlargement of the
corner, you can see that the lace was worked as a straight piece and than
expertly sewn together at the corner.  Nowadays we would design a corner,
which with Flanders being at a 90 degree angle is not very difficult.  So I
think it has some age to it.
I hope this is of help

Joke Sinclair
