We've had this conversation many times before. Looking back through the archives at least in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Ethafoam (polyethylene foam) and polystyrene not the same.

I have yet to find an ethafoam lace pillow in the UK, but I do have ethafoam tubes to put over handles of e.g. cutlery to make them easier for arthritic hands to grip. If you cut across, the texture is very small air bubbles.

There are several types of polystyrene including extruded - Styrofoam, which is a trademark of Dow Chemicals - and expanded. The lace pillows that I've had made from Styrofoam have been pale blue and the texture is a bit like a biscuit (cookie). If you cut it, you get dust. The expanded polystyrene ones, which are the most common type in the UK, are white and if you look closely you can see that they look as if they are made up of small balls. If you cut it, you, and everything else, gets covered in small, white balls that stick to everything, including the cutting blade.
