It's probably too late, since I see that you've already copied your pattern @ 140% but... I have designed some initials (mostly tape and leaf tallies but some very basic fans in the frame as well) and used to work them in Madeira 50. Since it's becoming harder and harder for me to make sewings in that size thread, I'm moving to Gutermann's silk myself. And found that it gives me the same density and overall look, when the pattern is copied @150%.
