I had this same problem several years ago at Christmas time. I had ordered
a copy of the first edition of Mrs. Palliser as a special Christmas gift to
myself from England from a used book dealer. I think at least a couple of
months went by, and the seller had completed all the forms for an insurance
pay-out, when the book appeared from whatever void it had been in.
Needless to say, this year presents special problems, but even in an
ordinary year it seems possible for packages to be swallowed up by the mail
for
months between England and here.

I do hope that no-one has had the same experience that Clay and I have
just
had. I got a Posh bags bobbin bag for her at Southern Counties Lacemakers
Fair and posted it airmail on 23rd November. It was delivered to her
today.
Needless to say we were both in a state of anguish over what had happened
to
it. I posted 4 parcels together, of which 3 were to Florida - one of those
was delivered on 23rd December and the other two are still in the wind
somewhere.

I'd got the forms downloaded to report missing mail ready to send as soon
as
Royal Mail starts working again on Wednesday.

Royal Mail are saying that, because of increased US security, post is
being
delayed by about a week as they can no longer send mail on passenger
flights
and are having to find space on cargo flights, as well as increased
customs
checks when the post finally arrives in the US. At the moment no parcels
can
be tracked.

We've also had two small book packages returned by Royal Mail to Amazon as
undeliverable - no attempt to deliver has been made. Our postie said there
are thousands of Amazon parcels in the local sorting office waiting to be
attended to. Reckon they decided it would be quicker to clear the backlog
around the country by sending whole consignments back to Amazon.

So if you've got packages already in the system bound for the US, then you
need patience - a lot of it. And if you're planning to send something, it
might be a good idea to wait until the end of January in the hope that
they
will have cleared the backlog and things will move a bit quicker.
