David, if you have to "remove and re-pin"  make yourself a felt pad that
becomes larger in the centre than at the front and back edges, then work
onto it (tuck it up under your pricking)

You can them remove the lace, pins and all, and straighten it up on the
roller, push down some of the pins, and gradually work off the pad, back
onto the roller.

 

I made a length of lace with the pattern hanging out the back, - and started
getting it all working to one side.  I managed to tweak it  reasonably
straight, and completed the piece before I ran out of sideways roller!!
