The international phonetic alphabet was not standardised until 1956 throughout the world. Before that time it depended on who was speaking, where they came from and where they learned the alphabet!! The British Royal Navy had one, a different one for the Army in the first world war, American military was different again... etc.... In fact I can remember in the '60's in the UK, the international operators used major cities worldwide as a phonetic code... although the code wasn't in use until the early days of Marconi.... after all, he made the first international radio transmission from Poldhu Point in Cornwall to St John's Bay, Newfoundland!

There you are.... a little bit of useless history!!
