But why would it be just a surname? This is not normal on old bobbins - christian or full names yes but not a surname alone. Unless it is someone famous - I have one inscribed Gladston (sic) after the 19th century English Prime Minister. A quick search in one of my bobbin databases (of 640 names only) I found the ones below - some from my own collection, others found.

ARCHER    - ?
HIGGINS    -  ?
MASON    -     Trade bobbin.
PRINCE    -     Royal title or maybe a horse!!
RECKLES    -    Trade bobbin
WAINRIGHT - Henry Wainright who committed a rather gruesome murder in the east end of London.
LESTER    -    Trade bobbin
