Yes there is a trick and it makes a difference. With one end you make an underhand with a loop. The other end must be placed into the loop in the correct direction. I usually forget and test my knot, if it slips out, I put it into the loop from the other direction.
Sometimes, the thread is very slick. If this is the case, I redo the knot, and pull on the ends of one thread, then the ends of the other thread, just adjusting and setting the knot somewhat.
