Yes there is a trick and it makes a difference.  With one end you make an
underhand with a loop. The other end must be placed into the loop in the
correct direction.  I usually forget and test my knot, if it slips out, I
put it into the loop from the other direction.

 

Sometimes, the thread is very slick.  If this is the case, I redo the knot,
and pull on the ends of one thread, then the ends of the other thread, just
adjusting and setting the knot somewhat.  Sometimes this sets it in place.
