A clove hitch is simply 2 loops placed one on top of the other (in opposite directions) and then slid over the top of a stick, pole or post. It has an entirely different function.

I know that now, but as a seven year old didn't, and didn't question what I was told; and now all I can remember was that I was told it was a sheet bend and involved rope and a chair leg! Fortunately a friend who had been a Guide showed me the difference before I became a Guider and needed to be able to teach the knots (though there I chickened out most of the time and DH, who had been a Scout and very knot-proficient, taught them for me!).

The nice thing about bobbin lace is that it shouldn't have any, of course!
