David, in my book thats perfectly acceptable, I always tell my friends that I teach that its no good learning to make lace well if you don't learn how to cheat. There is no point in taking out perfectly good work to try and discover where the extra pair came from - just lose it any way that suits you, the same goes for one pair short- just look for a suitable place to add one, problem solved. Many purists will shudder but as long as it does not show what matters.
