Reading your reply and that of Susan Hottle what I think I will do is print out a simple bit of pattern and either using highlights or the computer to colour, check out some simple colours and see which suits me best. It doesn't matter much what the pattern is as long as its fairly small and just a bit of it, but I should get a chance to see what is easier to see.

I've done some black Beds over the years and I've used a soft blue-ish green
pricking card or a teal.  I might've used a soft beige/peach one time,
maybe. White is going to be a very harsh contrast, so a pastel shade would
probably be an easier contrast to work with.
