Hello David and everyone I read somewhere it will work only if the scales on the wool fibres haven't permanently closed. I tried a similar recipe once to no effect. A knitted *lace* baby bonnet I was making one hot summer's day was shrinking in my hands from the heat and movement. I didn't like the idea of washing it with ammonia etc. then to give to a baby even if rinsed well, supposing it would work.
Maybe it was the water quality too. My local water tends to be bleach-y from chlorine treatment.
