Maybe it's for rolling your lace as it comes off the far side of your pillow? It would need to be pinned at the ends, to keep it from unrolling, and I think I can see a hole in the upper face of the knob at the near end ...
But the basket has crochet-type threads, and packets of sewing needles; maybe something related to needle lace?
