Many of you may have already done all of this but since there was an email
thread, I thought I would share what we have done for beginner supplies in
our group.   All beginners get the supplies free to use.  Only requirement
is if they decide bobbin lace is not their interest, they return all items for
other beginners.

As they continue, I find that beginners using foam
board creates the interest in purchasing their first “real pillow” pillow
since they do like the feel and look of our “real” cookie pillows rather
than the square foam board.   Using something that is not ideal seems to
create the interest in purchasing supplies.

We purchased a big block
of the insulation form board - it made 8 pillows, covered them with felt.
They are light and all fit in a box for transportation for demos for “try me
pillow”.

We requested donations from current members for bobbins that
they no longer use.  It seemed everyone had some bobbins that they had as
beginners but no longer use.   We have continental bobbins and plastic
spangled bobbins that people were not using.    We had one member who
passed away; family donated all her lace supplies to the group.   We took
all the bobbins for future beginners.

We purchased a few of the
International Square bobbin to supplement the other types of bobbins for
beginners to try out.

Over the first three lessons, the beginners get to
try continental, spangled and the square bobbin – everyone seems to choose
something different.   I believe it is an important aspect to retaining
their interest that they like the “feel” of their bobbins.

Others
may have some ideas to share…..
