I am currently looking at my lace for dolls book and they talk about a
spencer as a jacket made using the same material or similar shade to the
dress and ends saying for the spencer jacket.
I wonder if you mean chemise, which it says is worn under the corset, back
and front are the same. The doll is shown wearing the pantaloons and
corset. the book mentions that they are standard articles of clothing and
are useful for most period clothing outfits.. Looks a bit like the T shape
garment worn since the egyptian times, under all manner of top clothings in
different countries.

Hi Alex
It sounds right to me, but is difficult to Google because of all the M&S
hits! "Spencer bodice" does come up with a few illustrations, but they
vary quite a bit in style. If you don't get a more definitive reply on
here the best person to ask is possibly Gwynedd Roberts, she's very good
with historical children's fashion.

Dear Arachnids
I am making lace for doll's underwear and am currently working on a
bodice to
go with her drawers. I have been told that this article of clothing is a
spencer. Is this correct? I tried Wilipedia but there is no reference.
Happy lacemaking.
