It happens to me too. 

Mid sentence means at a quote.

The quote is somehow translated into some character not understood by other
computers. 

Maybe the sender could hit undo after a quote to get normal quotes, at least
in MS-Word it works that way. The stubborn thing changes quotes in
backquotes. A default feature you can switch off. 

Or the sender could configure to compose plain text mails in stead of
formatted html messages.
