I might not be able to quite match that, depending on how early in the 50s but I come close - and was probably closest to a teacher for at least some of those years. My grandmother was making lace as a hobby from long before I was born so I saw it being made from an incredibly early age. Sadly, she wasn't willing to teach me as she did my elder sisters and I didn't get to attend my first class until around 33 years later.
