Hi Arachnids I started my lacemaking using a book called 'Every girls book of hobbies' by E M de Foubert 1924 that I bought in a market, I have it on my shelf in front of me. It contains many interesting crafts including marbling paper, enamel work as well as bobbin lace. This was just as the lace revival was starting and there were no classes in Essex where I lived. The book described how to make a pillow and my father bought me bobbins and pins from the Needlewoman shop in London. I then found 'Lacemaking, Bucks point ground' by Channer in the local Co-op book shop. I did not understand thread sizing and tried using crochet cotton instead of sewing thread - not to be recommended. DMC encyclopedia by de Dillmont and the books by Maidment, Mincoff and Marriage and the Knypplerskan books by Inga-Lisa Olsson came later when I met another lacemaker. Pam Nottingham had not even written her book. Patterns were like hens' teeth, I had to work out how to plot them on graph paper and it took me three weeks to work out how to work a spider!. I use my experiences, good and bad, to help me write my books and hope they are easier to follow than some I had to use.
