Liz, As to girls going to school (other than Lace School) -- my Great, Great Grandfather was almost banished from the family, as he sent his daughter (my Great Grandmother) to school to learn to read and write. The family were outraged that he wasted his hard-earned money sending a Girl to school!!!
Far more recently than that, my own Grandmother WAS in fact banished from the family for daring to send my father to High School during the Depression when he should have been down the mines with the rest of the men folk. Thanks to her my father ultimately became Victoria's first male Speech therapist in 1947 (after many years of teaching and of course 5 years in the army).
