As far as the maths is concerned, lace workers and designers in the past had years of training and had to practice and becoome perfect. They did not have computers and other methods of producing accuracy that we use and their perfection using simple methods like rulers, compasses and pythagoras theorem to produce right angles was very well developed. They also developed 'judging by eye'. Don't underestimate their ability to be accurate.
