"A Handbook of Greek Lacemaking"...if anyone could offer more information
or
a direction to look...I would be very grateful. Ayla in New Zealand.

Ayla and Others Interested in Greek Lace,

Researching lace is usually difficult. I agree with Bev Walker that the
first place to search for Lace books is the University of Arizona site. To
comply with copyright laws, most of the books are pre-1923. This free
resource was made possible by a member of Arachne, and we have been using it
for
a number of years. http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/lace.html

Suggest you get in touch with a New Zealand Lace Guild or the Australian
Lace Guild (look them up) to meet others with your interest and perhaps
access their libraries. Another contact for you may be Greek-New
Zealand/Greek-Australian clubs. They may maintain libraries that would
include textiles
and some of the rarer books. You may prefer New Zealand, but need to know
that lace makers in both countries have the same problems getting books
and doing research.

For rare books, use a service of public libraries and university libraries
(in the U.S. called InterLibrary Loan). It is available in many nations,
just as it is for scholars studying other subjects.

You are interested in a very old culture, and some Greeks say they were
the first to develop lace! (See Book #6 below.) Written documentation is
scarce. Other nations have made the same claim!

OIDFA (International Bobbin and Needle Lace Organisation) had a Congress
in Athens a few years ago. Maybe some members have information to share.
Classes were offered in Greek laces. Lace-specific exhibitions in museums
were featured.

Many lace identification books include Greek laces. You must check them,
perhaps through a local lace guild. Museum and ethnic books on Greek
needlework often include lace amongst the embroideries, costumes, home
furnishings, etc. Also, "other crafts" will give design history and interpret
symbols (such as pottery and sculpture). Cast your net wide when you search.

To do research on GREEK LACE, now or in the future, print this list of
books for reference or for your Lace Guild libraries. The books include
Bibliographies, which will further expand research possibilities.
