That looks very effective, Jenny. I prefer to follow a chart for more complex patterns such as lace, marking the rows off with a highlighter pen as I go. I do have to print charts several times for some patterns which is wasteful of paper, but it works for me.
The cable sweater I am currently knitting has six panels of four different patterns with repeats of varying lengths so I have cut them out and stuck them onto another piece of paper in the order in which they are worked, (A,B,A,C,D,C) and I have added annotations to help with the repeats. This would be impossible with a written pattern but it has made the pattern much easier to follow.
