The way I think about it is this:

in one afternoon with a knitting teacher you can learn enough to make a
muffler or stole.  With a 2nd afternoon to learn increases and decreases, you
can make a simple sweater.

In bobbin lace the 1st lesson teaches the basic stitches.  The 2nd afternoon
may be grounds or footings.  But it takes at least 3 or 4 lessons before you
can make anything actually lace like.

Students ask if bobbin lace is hard.  I tell them it isn't as hard as it
looks, but there is a lot to learn.  I tell students that learning bobbin lace
is like learning to carve a full size eagle in flight out of wood.  You
wouldn't expect to be able to do that after 4 woodcarving lessons.  Bobbin
lace is the same.
