Are you planning the next home for your laces and supplies? It is a good thing to do while you are in control!! I have a 95-page 1980 lace exhibit book called "Catalogue of Antique Lace from Dr. A. I. Spriggs' Collection at The English Lace School (Tiverton)", copyrighted by Mrs. S. M. Cox. Does anyone know if Spriggs was related to Mrs. Cox? Are the laces in the January 2014 auction from his collection? Also, I found a 1 1/2-page May 1980 article Mrs. Cox wrote for International Old Lacers in the U.S.. This was about 18 months after The English Lace School was opened in Tiverton. It was quite a leap of faith to start, because there was nothing like it in the U.K. at the time, and there were very few lace teachers. U.S. customers of Holly Van Sciver will enjoy the following paragraph from the article written by Susan Cox, Principal: "I have already started a correspondence with the Great Lakes Lace Group and would be happy to send copies of our newsletter, which is normally sent out to ex-students, to any other groups who would like to hear of our activities. At the moment I have two young Americans staying in the school whilst we are closed to students. They have been cycling 'round Britain and are "Wintering" here as Holly, the wife, is a lacemaker. After 5,000 miles 'round U.K. they are off to the rest of Europe for Spring and Summer." If anyone has the newsletters from the school, written by Mrs. Cox, I would be happy to give them a home in the library here. It is safe to say that mine is one of the largest lace and embroidery libraries in the U.S. Donating it to a permanent new home is on my agenda. I mean a museum, library, educational institution or other similar entity that (1) understands and appreciates the collection's historical value; (2) is willing to protect the collection while also allowing access to the public for learning and educational purposes; and (3) is willing to preserve the library as a primary source". Private suggestions from Arachne members are welcome. I find the thought of an auction impossible to accept. The library and collection can go at any time, which I think would be fun to launch (I'll just move close to where it is permanently located, so my work can continue!) She succeeded in reviving lacemaking in the UK by teaching live-in lace classes and inviting the well-known lacemakers of Europe to come and teach at her Lace School.. - To unsubscribe send email to [email protected] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [email protected].
