Welcome back to lace ;)
My free advice is to start with a pattern with just a few pairs to get a
sense of the process as you mention. It doesn't need to be a beginning
pattern, if you can see right away what you need to do to start - a
bookmark is logical or could be a motif like a Christmas ornament. Of
course you will likely need to try different arrangements with the pillow,
you and chair/table, or standing comfortably with the pillow. Maybe even
winding bobbins is going to be painful, or could end up being therapeutic!
