Subscribers to Laurie Waters' Lace News received notification of an interesting lace celebration in Portugal that some Arachnes might like to know about.
It is called Mostra Internacional Rendas de Bilros, Penich XXIII Concurso de Rendas de Penich Organizers: Câmara Municipal de Peniche, Associaçao Peniche Rendibilros, Escola Municipal de Rendas de Bilors. Thursday, July 24 to Sunday July 27, 2015. Are any Arachnes attending? It says there will be delegations from Argentina, Belgium, Brazil (where they speak Portuguese), Bulgaria, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and Wales. (Note: Wasn't someone asking about lace in Bulgaria just last week?) Laurie offered an enjoyable 2015 announcement video to watch http://tinyurl.com/qf4o3yo After the announcement for this year, there seems to be on a continuous loop of lace videos, so I cannot tell you specifically when you might see some segments I enjoyed. There is one on making lace using pearl-headed pins that is 16 minutes, so time to take a tea break for most of you. At the end of each segment you will continue to the next video. From home, you can spend a few hours in Portugal without the expense of travel, which may be worthwhile to some of you. >From this site, you can opt to click on segments offered in a menu to the right of your screen. Either way, there is much to see. You may not understand Portuguese, but you do understand lace and enthusiasm. There is a wonderful segment showing happy young girls making lace - and they are WEARING lace. Are you wearing lace this Summer? After them is a segment about lace on shoes. Most of you will not want to miss that. Some of the international lacemakers from last year are interviewed. If you are from England or Belgium, you'll perhaps recognize them? There is a fashion show that gives ideas for adding lace to your clothes. Enjoy this break away from your bobbins, and if you want to learn to make Portuguese lace, there is the 2001 book published by Barbara Fay: "Bobbin Lace of Peniche" by Janne L. G. Hill and Graça Maria Ramos, which has 11 prickings, including one for the watch tower on the book's cover. One of the 3 languages in this book is English.
