The rule of thumb I was taught as a child was that vinegar was for animal fibers (silk and wool), while salt was for plant ones (cotton and linen)

While it's been many years since I did any dying, when I did (and it was always homespun wool) I used Alum as a mordant with good effect - certainly much better than salt. I haven't heard it mentioned here yet, but I think if it's OK on wool it's probably OK on silk as well.
