Hi All, I've found this thread interesting but only now checked the photos from the Smithsonian. Years ago I took our local kind of bamboo to Ken Van Dieren at the Ithaca Lace Days to make some Ipswich bobbins. Thinking of bobbins shaped on a lathe I couldn't figure out how he could use the bamboo. Seeing the bobbins in the pictures, of course they used this kind of bamboo! The bobbins are just a stalk with plugs in the end. This bamboo grows rampant in my corner of New England so they'd have plenty for Ipswich lace and making the bobbins would be fairly easy.
