Dear Arachnes,

I posted on the exhibition last year but in response to Jeri's prompting I
wanted to let you know that the exhibition of samplers at the Fitzwilliam
Museum in Cambridge has been extended until October 2018.
I spent a short time in it over the holidays, and got the exhibition catalogue
as a Christmas present, both are well worth while, & I will go back to use the
provided magnifying glasses on a longer visit. The exhibition aim was the
importance of samplers as documentary evidence of past lives, and it certainly
does that. It is not just the classic "alphabet" band samplers. It is
fascinating how much they have learned particularly about the Quaker school
samplers and their creators. There is also some rare white work, with a couple
of exquisite needle lace insertions of a thistle rose and shamrock which for
some reason don't make it to the website, but a search on google images for
"sampled lives" show up.
They are also advertising a couple of day workshops on stitching a sampler in
march. More details here
