Hello Everyone

I made it to the Lace Festival last weekend and had a wonderful weekend
. It was fantastic to be able to see some old friends and to meet and
make some new ones.

On Saturday there were five speakers on "Lace Looking Forward". Elena
Kanagy-Loux from USA started with an introduction and synopsis of her
career and the use of Lace in fashion for the future.  Cecilia Heffner
spoke about her textile career and her contemporary response to the
transient nature of place.   Lindy de Wijn outlined her lace journey
with placing lace in Public spaces.  Maggie Hensel-Brown also talked
about her journey with her narrative needlelace works and finally
Angharad Rixon talked about the presenters for the upcoming  Doily Free
Zone event.

On Sunday we had six speakers for "Lace Looking Back".  Gwynedd Roberts
from UK told us about the Tebbs sisters and the lace school that they
ran  in the early 1900's.  Rosemary Shepherd's talk on the origins of
Bobbin Lace was presented by Angharad as Rosemary was not well enough to
travel to the festival.   Barbara Ballantyne spoke about the filet
crochet patterns of Mary Card. Dr Helen Parsons gave a talk about Lace
in the Edwardian era with illustrations of many beautiful gowns.  Effe
Mitrofanis spoke about the evolution of the Italian Needlelaces. and
finally Annete Meldrum spoke about the History and Heritage of all the
Irish Laces.

Altogether this was a very varied and interesting program .   I believe
that the presentations were recorded. If the recordings become available
for general viewing or listening I will  post again.

The venue for the weekend was at the Australian Catholic University and
was a beautiful and comfortable venue. The Exhibition remains on view at
Gallery 76 until March 3rd.

Regards

Dawn Howell
