Susan,
I think the M means make one - in whichever way you choose from your list,
but Not 'yarn over' - that way would be noted as 'YO' I think.
On a graph the Yarn Over is usually marked as an 'O' I believe. Make one is
to knit twice into the stitch, or pick up the bar between stitches and knit
into the back of it.
