buttons on lace pillows
can anybody tell why it is considered good luck to have a button on a
lacemaking pillow or have I got this wrong?

I don't know about buttons on actual pillows - but superstition is that
spinsters should have one, and preferably a shirt or flybutton, instead
of the bottom bead on a spangle, supposedly to help 'catch" a husband.
