Hello Erica
I have been given some vintage threads "Steamer Machine Silk" and
"Nora Silk Twist" which I would like to know more about. Both were
made in England, and are on old-fashioned wooden reels (older than the
sewing-thread reels I use). Does anyone know if these threads were
rayon, or real silk, please?
I've never heard of, let alone seen, either of them.
Something described as machine silk probably is silk, but silk twist
just might just be cotton! Sylko! or it maight be silk. If it's
rayon it (should) say art silk - artificial silk not silk for artwork.
One "Steamer" reel has '80/3' on the label, but the other has a
non-removable sticker reading '36'.
Probably the 80/3 is the silk size (denier) and 36 is the cotton count.
Have a look at

Although neither of these threads are mentioned there is quite a lot of
info about the different reels and you might get some clues as to their
age
