You make an excellent point!!  When we choose to use color, I think that it is 
most effective in relatively simple designs, where the designs are strong 
enough so that the presence of color does not dominate.  I think what sometimes 
happens when color is applied without thought to the impact is that "the color 
wears the lace".  On the other hand, all color is relative, so that if a 
variegated thread is chosen for a trail within a piece, if the ground work is a 
color of similar hue or value, then the result can be stunning.

I have enjoyed applying the lessons I learned about color, in my undergraduate 
art studies, and then in my quilting, ...to lace!  Lace is a challenging medium 
for color, but it is very exciting when it comes together well.
