I usually add beads without a crochet hook. As you are lacing, make a loop at the place where you want the bead. Use a thin wire with the end bent like the letter 'J' and pass through the bead and catch the loop. Pull the loop through the bead and pass the bead through the loop. Tighten the lace stitch. The bead will stay in the lace.
I learned this from Springett's book on making lace snakes.
