I have just come back from a couple of weeks in the Domincan Republic and as
I was there to relax I did, of course, take my lace pillow.
I met people from Italy, France, Germany, Holland and of course the
Dominicans. I don't speak Italian, German or Dutch and only a little
Spanish but everyone who saw me sitting on the beach making lace came over
to watch, and to talk to me. We found the common word "lace" in the various
languages and managed to have a conversation. Some people came back day
after to day to see how I was getting on.
I am making a curtain for a door. It is made in strips and I had one single
strip with me, but also had photos on my camera of the three strips that are
being worked on at home. The photos which I showed to those who seemed most
interested opened yet another door of words, some of which I understood and
much sign language on both sides to explain what the lace will be for
eventually (I reckon this is a 2-2.5 year project)
The best part was that the vendors who prowl along the beach also came to
watch and as many of them are also artisans they were very interested and
were fascinated by this craft that they had never seen - and because they
were so busy watching they forgot to bug us to buy something.
