Dear Nathalie
Some French crochet history, mainly of the 1900s, is given in the book
De la crise de la sardine a l'age d'or de la dentelle. The senior author is
France Caillard. It was issued in 2003.
It is still available and can be bought on www.abebooks.com.
Cotton thread is the most likely. The DMC Cordonnet Special (crochet
cotton) began in 1884.
Going back in time, there were many brands of crochet thread about in the
1840s and 1850s when the blossoming of crochet lace began. Some were called
crochet cotton. I checked out all such pattern books I could find when I
was preparing my book on Mlle Riego and was surprised by the considerable
number.

Subject: [lace] Crochet
I realize this list is dedicated to lace but I was hoping people could
help me out with crochet history. Does anyone know about crochet in
the 1950, in France? What material was used? I wondered if they used
cotton or linnen. I guess probably cotton?
And this is not done now, but I discovered that a lot of ladies copied
the patterns from La Mode Illustrée (from the 19th century) and
assembled copies and so made a new album. Why did they do this?
Sorry for making this an off-topic post, nevertheless I really hope
someone can help me out!
Nathalie
