Helen, I travel with my lace pillow at least once a month. The thing I have found to be most troublesome is protecting the pins. To solve that problem I have several round cardboard boxes that used to house rounds of chese. I turn these upside down over the pins and then hold the box down with a cover cloth. I think that small margarine tubs or cream cheese tubs would also work.
You might consider protecting the threads from abrasion by putting some fabric between them and the tubs but I have not had a problem with that so far.
