Others have addressed your other questions, Sue... here's my contribution.
Yes, chaos stitch is in Binche. (This is not to say that is isn't
present in other forms of lace as well...) The piece that has been on
one of my pillows for over a year (over two years?) has a section of
"chaos stitch" (didn't know it had a name...) that makes it a monster of
a pattern. There are figures on either side of this patch of ground,
and each pair that comes in to work the ground goes through the ground
and then into the figure on the other side, and it isn't until the pair
returns that I can make another trip across the "chaos". Sometimes the
pair works through ground on the *other* side of the figure, so I
literally have to work to the edge and then back. By then, unless I've
made very good markers on my diagram, I have lost my place!! So, it's
an intensive process, and this particular piece is not as much fun as
others I've worked. That's why it has been sitting on the pillow for
two years! But... it does make an interesting ground.
