<I've watched a few episodes of "Nothing to Declare" about the work of
<Australian customs officers, and how they clamp down really hard on taking

<Presumably it applies to bone as well - or perhaps not.

The Australian TV programmes about customs checks certainly seem to make prospective travellers apprehensive!

When travelling from New Zealand to Australia, I have taken a travel pillow several times -admittedly, not now in hand luggage, because of the security restrictions.

Each time I travel with bobbins, I make sure that I declare them, and have only had to explain that they are turned wood (I haven't travelled with bone bobbins, up to now) to have them 'okayed' by the customs officers. If I'm asked to show the bobbins, I presume that this is because the officer doesn't understand what lace bobbins are: this happens *very* rarely.

When we travel to the US in July, I shall put a couple of bobbins in my hand luggage deliberately, to have them ready to show if/when asked - not special ones, just basic ones - and if there are questions and comments, I shall report these to the list on my return!
