Over the years a lot of people have asked me how I know what I'm doing or where to put the next pin, and I explain that I have a pattern underneath all the threads and that it's rather like a road map. Depending on the person I may make some joke about it not talking like a GPS would, but people tend to quickly grasp the concept of a road map, and that the map I'm using for my lace may be more or less detailed than other maps, depending on the type of lace being made (in a nutshell).
I've found a lot of people have an a-ha moment when they see that I do have a pattern underneath, and the road map analogy seems to work well for me.
