Dear Claire

The Financial Times is of course just giving the terms the
fashion industry in the UK uses, and as you point out, it is interesting that
the names tend to be foreign.  I think this is typical though of fashion and
luxuries - people like to think of them as imported from somewhere
appropriate, and despise locally made goods.  Think of 18th century "Bath
Brussels" - almost certainly made in East Devon... English dressmakers
becoming couturiers with names to suit... Louis XIV's and Colbert's campaign
to get the French aristocracy to buy locally made luxuries (not just lace -
tapestries and porcelain).  Indeed, the English also forbad the import of
foreign lace in that period, which made it all the more desirable.  Doesn't
help historical research of course, if we take the place-names seriously.  I'm
sure it's the same everywhere - would our US fellows expect a shop to do
better labelling a designer outfit as made in Texas, with Paris in very small
print, or the other way round!

contemporary fashion

I think I shall have to pay that exhibition a visit.
Shame they didn't mention any English laces in the bit at the bottom, bearing
in mind it was a piece for an English paper.
