One thing that might simplify the process is a subscribe/add-to button a la my yahoo. I can envision potential subscribers finding out about a user from and outside source like a blog or article. Example: <http://bit.ly/add-to-laconica> http://bit.ly/add-to-laconica. <http://bit.ly/add-to-laconica>
In addition, laconica should allow for remote subscription even if logged in to that particular instance.
