Note that Pownce went with ! instead of @ for usernames/replies in it's system... I still think it's weird/ugly and that they did it just to be different from Twitter. > ! - can be used in the middle of a sentence to hotlink other users on > the site. It's rather just see @tommie as it would get confusing for users having to determine which symbol to use for what. > @ - only consider @username in the beginning of a sentence as a reply, > rather than each time a @ is used in the middle of a sentence. There's a few distinctions here. First, does everyone assume a message starting with @ is a reply? I sometimes start a message with @ because I am targeting a user, not in reply to anything they said. Also, I would prefer to see something as a reply (or message to me) if @ appears anywhere in the dent, not just the start. This also allows to target a message to more than one user. > Maybe a bit out of context, but i'd really like a feature where i can > decide if i wish to see my friends replies or not. In the example above i'd see evans reply if i was > friends with nigelj, otherwise not. This could be a cool option. You could then choose to cut down the noise and focus only on people you know.... or keep it open and try to discover other users you might choose to follow.
