Ok, turns out the problem did reside in laconica itself, not the client.

My hosting provider, 1and1, runs PHP as a CGI binary and thus, PHP
HTTP Authentication is not possible :(

I guess I'll just have an excuse to change hosting provider now..

Anyways, out of curiosity, is there a reason why characters like dash
are not allowed in nicknames ?
