I think it'd be _really_ tricky to do. Laconica would have to be able to
write over its own files at runtime -- really dangerous in a Web
environment! If you've got examples of other Web packages that do this,
though, I'd be interested.
I'd probably suggest using your OS's package management rather than
having Laconica update itself.
As an aside, Control Yourself, Inc. (my company) will be providing
hosting services for Laconica around the end of February. Kinda like
wordpress.com -- we do all the maintenance and upgrades and backups, and
you worry about making the site look good and be popular.
