$ is fine, I think $$ is overkill

I thought that too but using your example below the markers would create the tags 'GOOG' and '872' - 872 being a silly tag to create along with any other time someone used a $ in a post.


the groups is that groups requires lower case extension rendering $ $GOOG
useless, while $$goog would work, which is not intuitive.

Yes, in this instance (below) there would be no need to replicate ! goog and $GOOG as markers, so merging would be a good thing, although for the site I am building, I personally would not advertise the '!' functionality as it could potentially confuse.
