The functionality of most of the daemons will happen at "Web time" (when you post a notice) rather than offline if you turn queues off. They exist at all because if you have 5000 subscribers, it can be hard to send out jabber notices to them at Web time; your page may time out. If you have <100, say, it should be fine.

The sole exception is the xmppdaemon, which receives incoming notices from Jabber users. It has to be on all the time, to give users somewhere to send their notices.
